July 4th at the Ballpark

Happy 4th of July, friends, and happy 250th bday to the United States! I’ve always loved this holiday. When I was a kid we either went to my uncle’s house out in the country for a family party, or we went to Waco’s Freedom Frolic in Indian Springs Park. It was the high point of the summer!

That was then. Fast forward to 2007, when my darling only child was born on July 4th, and changed the holiday for me forever – in the best possible way! When we are together, the day is about a birthday, but one definitely takes precedence over the other. When we are apart, I go all-out-all-American, and since 2020 the celebration of choice has been at the Dell Diamond.

It’s no secret that I love baseball, and having the Round Rock Express within a few minutes of my house is a HUGE bonus! The Express puts on a 4th of July party that ticks all the boxes and fills me with happiness, and this year, with it being the Big 250, they really pulled out all the stops. It was glorious. I got there before the gates even opened at 5:30pm and for nearly an hour just walked around soaking up the vibes and photographing. H A P P I N E S S!

I wandered around with both my Canon M6 and my Canon Canonet QL17, both in my toolbox thanks to my Dad. Today I’m sharing only digital images, straight to jpeg! It’s only July 5th, and considering what time I got home last night I certainly haven’t developed the film yet.

I realize I’m sharing a lot of photographs with you today, but I wanted to share the feeling, the story, and the wonder of what was a very memorable and joyful evening-into-night at the ballpark.

One of the things I love about events like the 4th of July is how people dress: I adore the melee of patriotic fun outfits, not taking things too seriously, people dressing as wildly as the fireworks that will end the evening. I feel this way about Christmas festivals also, when people choose to make themselves a walking celebration rather than worrying about the usual fashion choices.

I think Spike agrees with me!
