47

Oh yes oh yes it’s almost my birthday, and that means it’s time for me to publish another year’s worth of self-portraits!

47 was a good year. It was a year of changes: we have new cats in the house, who came to us as kittens, and as a result we didn’t travel more than one overnight and a couple of day trips this past summer. That broke a six year streak of us making epic camping road trips, and I was afraid I would miss it terribly. Not all changes are unwelcome, however. While it was a shame not to have that much-needed break from reality, to reset, reconnect, and to make new work, staying home this summer has in fact been beautiful.

Not traveling was the biggest change in terms of a palpable chunk, but the flux of life has also been swinging strongly in a new direction: my only child learned to drive and is in her senior year. The biggest change yet is on the horizon, looming, smiling at all of us, daring me to dwell on it too much. (I refuse.)

I feel like my emotions about a whole slew of things vacillated wildly over the past year, but I am centered and focused now and excited about all of the good things to come!

Going through all the self portraits I’ve made since September 2023, I feel like what I found looks like a parade of cameras – and shadows! Some are recent pinholes, with varying degrees of success (like the one you see above).

Many / most incorporate mirrors and windows. Gotta find myself out there somewhere. . . . .

My bathroom has nice light and obviously beckons me to click off a photo with whatever camera at hand needs to have its roll finished. I feel like these are my Friedlander moments! Thanks for looking, y’all. Here’s to the year to come!
