Waco Project

East Terrace (Historic Home in Waco)

It’s been a while since I mentioned anything about my Waco project, and it’s also been a while since I worked on it! The reality is that carrying out a documentary project of a place that requires spending days out of town on a regular basis – and it not being an Actual Paying Job that would cause it to be prioritized – was a bit too ambitious of a plan for me. I’m still making photos there when I can, though, and recently I spent some time going back over the ones I made in the early spring.

What I am sharing with you today are all photographs made with my Diana; they have been the driving force of the project alongside a couple of sharper cousins. One trip to Waco (in February or March) I spent time photographing downtown and by the Brazos River.

I used to love eating in the old Waterworks restaurant when I was a kid! While I’m glad it’s still standing, I wish someone would bring it back to life for new generations of Wacoans. Surely it’s a renovation project waiting to happen.

I’m always happy for an excuse to stop by St Francis on the Brazos! It was even open this time.

Another trip to Waco, I stayed closer to home, photographing inside my parents’ house and around the neighborhood where I grew up. There’s a local park that used to have a playground and a ballpark, but only the baseball remains. They took out the old playground equipment years ago and haven’t replaced it. Similarly, someone broke the glass portion of the old gumball machine at my parents’ house, and since it’s also yet to be replaced it stands eerily like a Magritte moment by the door.

Next time: photos from other cameras! Thanks for looking, y’all.
