For my February frugal roll (here’s Jan’s roll, in case you missed it) I had my heart set on photographing around Southwestern University’s Campus. I had never been there before – somehow. When I arrived, I realized I’d driven right past it going somewhere else in November. But I digress! My first official visit to the campus was on February 11th, when I had to be there anyway for a school club event.
It was absolutely freezing that morning. We arrived before 7am and I hunkered down in my truck drinking coffee until the sun came up enough for the light to hit the buildings. By 8am or so, I was ready to walk around but doubted the outcome of this plan since the wind chill was in the 20s and the wind was blowing a fair clip. I decided that discomfort wasn’t enough to dissuade me from carrying out my plan, so I cowgirled up and wandered around.
My eyes watered, my nose took on a Santa Claus quality (that others later remarked on when they saw me), and I had trouble thinking clearly, but I managed to get all twelve frames exposed. It was still a bit dark for the Holga, so I used multiple exposures to compensate, and also bulb mode on a couple of shots.
The bulb mode photos (below) are a mixed bag. One is meh, the other I’m pretty happy with. The piano was indoors, so I rested the camera on the window frame and pressed the lens up to the glass.
The campus is lovely, and I would like to be there again sometime when conditions are warmer. At least it wasn’t raining! The sun was glorious. I made a bunch of instant photos, too, with both a Fuji Instax Mini and a Lomo Automat Magellan.

The Fine Arts building felt like home to me – not surprisingly! There was an art exhibition open for view when I went back in the afternoon, which is where the photo of the little bird was made. The outdoor sculpture was titled “monstrance for a grey horse” and had a granola bar in its mouth. It looked like a Kind Bar.
Thanks for looking! All the black & white photos were made with a Holga and Holga 400 film (aka Foma). Next month the plan is to expose my frugal roll at Big Bend National Park!
