PolaCon 7

Saturday October 1st was one of those magical days that happens only every once in a while: a day where I get to immerse myself in photography AND meet a bunch of great people who are also photographers AND watch a bunch of demos, make a community cyanotype, and share whatever I can with people who are actually listening. Saturday October 1st, I went to PolaCon 7!

If you aren’t familiar with the amazing event that is PolaCon, it’s put on by the Instant Film Society and it takes place toward the end of each September in Denton, TX. It could be they put these on in other locations, too; y’all need to check their website for all the info.

I’ve known about this event for years, but in the past it coincided with World Cyanotype Day weekend, and while WCD was based in Texas, it took precedent. This year, however, not only was WCD the previous weekend, it also relocated to Tennessee! Sometimes you just have to wait for the Right Time.

I could gush for 40 paragraphs about how much fun I had and how impressed I was with PolaCon, but I will spare you this and focus on showing you the Polaroids I made that day instead (phew, right?). I hauled my tail out of bed at 6am and was parked and ready to take on the Denton square by 10:30 am. The light was PERFECT!

I wrote before about how much I enjoyed the square in Denton. That was a weekday. Let me add to my enthusiastic praise of the place by saying that a Saturday was EVEN BETTER! There were lots of people out, classic cars cruising around, and even a bluegrass jam in the shade by the courthouse (I could have spent the rest of the day sitting there listening; instead I made about 20 photos and forced myself to move on).

I brought a pack of Keith Haring frame film that I had been hoarding for just the right occasion. I’m glad I did!

I had my Holga with me, too, since it’s Holga Week, plus of course a 35mm camera, so oh dear y’all are going to have to suffer through another post about Denton eventually. . . . .

There were some problems, as well: I got photobombed by a couple of cars, and didn’t frame a shot properly to get it to expose well . . . . for the most part, however, I was very, very happy with the photos I made on Saturday.

Also here’s a portrait of me right before I got back in the truck to head home, by the one and only Daniel Rodrigue (thanks, Daniel!)

If you can make it to PolaCon next year, I hope to see you! I’m already looking forward to it.
